Immunology is the science which deals with the study of immune system of all organisms.
How the immune system behaves in certain conditions, what reactions occur in the body when a foreign element enters the body and how the body defends itself is all covered in this field. To live a healthy life we need to stay fit and in order to do that our immune system must be in proper order. That’s where Immunology comes into picture!
It deals with the functioning of immune system in both healthy and diseased conditions, malfunctions in immunological disorders like hypersensitivity, autoimmune diseases, transplant rejections. Immunity is the ability of an organism to resist infections from pathogens. When a person is healthy, the immune system helps the body fight infection by rejecting foreign pathogens- viruses and bacteria. When the immune system is defective, it can fail to protect the body, or may even attack it. Diseases caused by disorders of the immune system may be caused by immunodeficiency, in which parts of the immune system fail to provide an adequate response, or autoimmunity, in which the immune system over responds against its own system, causing damage to the body of its host. Other immune disorders include hypersensitivity, in which the system responds inappropriately or too intensely to harmless compounds, as in asthma and allergies.
The study of Immunology deals with: various types of immunity, cells of immune system, various organs involved, antigens, antibodies, types of immunoglobulin and their functions, immnunotechniques, major histocompatibility complex, complement system, hypersensitivity, diseases, vaccines. The application of Biotechnology in biological system makes it important to identify the impact on the immune system. A biotechnologist has to keep is hands also glued in the field of immunology for improved achievements. Major applications of such a combined approach being primarily disease treatment and secondly response of human body.
