Institute Of Bioinformatics And Biotechnology (IBB) was established in 2002 at the Savitribai Phule Pune University under the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) grant of University Grants Commission. The focus of IBB is to promote high quality research and develop technically skilled human resource in the area of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. An independent building for IBB has been functional since 2005. This has a total area of 30,000 sq. ft. and houses classrooms, research and M. Sc. laboratories, central instrumentation facility, computer laboratory, animal and plant tissue culture laboratories, fermentation laboratory, library, faculty rooms, administrative offices and store rooms.

The main focus areas identified for research by institute are metabolic disorders, drug development, biofilms, environmental biotechnology and bioenergy. It has research projects in some of these areas as well as other areas such as bio-nanomaterials, biomaterial, marine biotechnology and structural bioinformatics have been initialized in collaboration with various groups at different departments on the campus.
