The Cardiff School of Biosciences is looking for an interested candidate for the position of Research Associate to conduct research on a British Heart Foundation funded project to investigate the anti-atherogenic therapeutic potential of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid in vivo together with the underlying molecular mechanisms. The project involves collaboration with the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, Bristol Heart Institute and Ben-Gurion University.
- Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Molecular Biology or a related subject area or other relevant equivalent research experience.
- An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields: * Molecular Biology * Tissue Culture
- Research experience in probing molecular pathways in disease.
- Proven ability to publish in national journals. Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication. Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with a flexible, responsible approach to working in a multi-tasking environment.
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work. Excellent organisational skills. Committed to precision, accuracy and task completion.
- Experience in the breeding, maintenance and analysis of murine models of disease. Proven ability to work without close supervision.
- Knowledge/experience in the field of atherosclerosis. Experience of supervising and directing staff and/or students. A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.

- To conduct research in accordance with the aims and objectives of the grant and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
- To plan and perform research within an established programme that includes laboratory experimentation, critical evaluation and interpretation, data and statistical analysis, and data recording
- To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
- To review the research literature relating to the project, transferring this knowledge to the research. To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
- To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects.
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
